Cyber Bullying Lawsuit Filed In Los Angeles, Teenage Victim Committed Suicide

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Lori Drew of Missouri was charged Thursday by Los Angeles federal prosecutors of cyber bullying. The case stemmed from a fake MySpace account Drew created to make it appear she was Josh Evans, a 16-year old boy, who befriended online Megan Meier.

From online flirting, the exchange of messages between Meier and "Evans" progressed into sexual exchanges. But suddenly the fictional male teenager created by Drew rejected Meier, leading the girl, then 13, to commit suicide. Drew is the mother of one of Megan's former friends.

According to U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien, the case was likely the first of its kind in the country and would create legal jurisprudence.

"This adult woman allegedly used the Internet to target a teenage girl with horrendous ramifications... This was a tragedy that did not have to happen," O'Brien said, quoted by the Los Angeles Times.

Drew's legal counsel, H. Dean Steward, denied his client made the MySpace account or ordered someone to do it. But one of the employees of Drew, 19-year old Ashley Grills, in an interview with ABC News, admitted she, Drew and Drew's daughter were the ones who wrote the messages to Meier.

Steward also questioned why the lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles when majority of those involved are from Missouri. MySpace is based in Los Angeles.

If convicted, the 49-year old Drew may be imprisoned in a federal jail up to 20 years.
