Jewish Group In Germany Files Suit Against Google, YouTube For Anti-Semitic Videos

Berlin, Germany (AHN) - The Central Council of Jews in Germany filed a suit at a Hamburg court against Google and YouTube over anti-Semitic videos. The videos in dispute include a photo of former Central Council of Jews head Paul Spiegel ablaze with a swastika in the background.

The video was on YouTube's site for months. The council said the video incites racial hatred and discrimination.

YouTube is not a stranger to controversies. Right-wing extremist messages and videos have been discovered in 2006, while the Nazi propaganda film "Jud Suss" was downloaded on the site in 2007 despite the presence of new filtering software.

Stephen Kramer, general secretary of the council, told Spiegel online, "The radical right-wing scene is using YouTube massively, as a platform. In defense, Google Germany's spokesman Kay Oberbeck said YouTube has self-policing features that allows site members to complain about an offending video with the click of a mouse, and that material could no longer be reposted on the site in the future.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands Islamic Federation asked a court in The Hague to come up with a board of censors to review a film about the Islam religion with the aim of banning it for attacking their faith. Right-wing extremist Geert Wilders plans to exhibit the movie despite growing complaints from different groups.

While the Dutch government has called on Wilders to give up the project, it said it cannot legally censor a film before it is shown. Wilders said he plans to release the 15-minute film before April 1, or make it available on the Internet if no broadcaster will air it.

The film portray's Islam's holy book, the Koran, a fascist book. It provoked complaints from several Muslim nations including Pakistan, Indonesia, Egypt, Iran and Afghanistan.
