Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Lori Drew of Missouri was charged Thursday by Los Angeles federal prosecutors with cyber bullying. The case stemmed from a fake MySpace account Drew allegedly created to make it appear she was Josh Evans, a 16-year old boy, who befriended online teen neighbor Megan Meier. Meier, 13, committed suicide after her fake online boyfriend rejected her after a long romance. Drew is the mother of one of Megan's former friends. According to U.S. Attorney Thomas O'Brien, the case was likely the first of its kind in the country and would create legal jurisprudence. Drew's legal counsel, H. Dean Steward, denied his client made the MySpace account or ordered someone to do it. But one of the employees of Drew, 19-year old Ashley Grills, in an interview with ABC News, admitted she, Drew and Drew's daughter were the ones who wrote the messages to Meier. Steward also questioned why the lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles when most of those involved are from Missouri. MySpace is based in Los Angeles. If convicted, the 49-year old Drew faces up to 20 years in federal jail.
