Helsinki, Finland (AHN) - Technology is helping catch philandering government officials. If disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was caught having an affair with a hooker due to a wiretap, Finnish Foreign Minister Illkka Kanerva was sacked from office Tuesday after media published around 200 suggestive text messages he sent to a dancer. The 29-year old dancer, Johana Tukainen, is a member of the Scandinavian Dolls dance troupe. She met Kanerva at a flight on January. Tukainen sold the text messages to Hymy, a gossip magazine. A sample of Kanerva's SMS that caused his post was, "Would you like to do it in an exotic place? Where could it be?" Jyrki Kateinan, leader of the National Coalition Party, explained to Spiegel Online, "Kanerva has shown a great lack of judgment... he doesn't enjoy the full trust which a minister needs." The embattled minister did not report for work on Tuesday, saying he was sick. He also was not available for a statement. Alexander Stubb, a member of the European Parliament, will replace Kanerva, who was described by Finnish author Anja Snellman as suffering from an obsessive-compulsive disorder which needs treatment. Kanerva, 60, is not the first Finnish public official to be disgraced by a scandal in his personal life. Prime Minister Matti Vanhannen became the subject of a detailed memoir written by his former lover after Vanhannen cut off his relationship with her through a text message which said, "It's over." But the prime minister's political career did not end with the scandal, while Kanerva had to leave the government in disgrace. The former finance minister had held three ministers position since the 1990s. This is the second time he was involved in an SMS scandal, the first was in 2005. At that time Kanerva promised not to repeat his offense, but he did not keep his pledge, Kateinan said.
