New York (AHN) - Online video sharing site YouTube formally announced Wednesday a new free feature that provides posters with more in-depth information about their videos' viewership rates. The feature, aptly called YouTube Insight, shows a more detailed view of the number of viewers a video is getting, as well as the timestamps and geographical locations within the United States of the video's viewers. For international viewers, the posters will only be given a rundown of the statistics of viewership per country. The data is updated daily, according to the New York Times. The new information gathered by posters is expected to help in the promotion of their posts, due to the specific information regarding Internet traffic, and the actual peak times of viewership. Ideally, this information will provide insight as to the time of posting, and the kind of demographic to be focused on when creating and uploading videos. A test of the feature included a band who posted their video on the website, and planned their tour based on the states where their video received the most number of views. Product manager Tracy Chan stated that Insight would hopefully bolster YouTube as a potential tool for marketers gathering data on their selected demographic, or even on which demographics to center on. "Effectively YouTube has become an ad-effectiveness, or an insight-effectiveness, tool," she said. The Wall Street Journal reported that YouTube is also planning on launching an added feature that shows how viewers come to arrive at a posted video. The tool would give information as to whether the video was found using a search engine, a link on another website, or a related video. Up until the recent features, YouTube's provided information only included user ratings of the video, along with a comment board.
